Almost all the invitations are printed, although a few are handwritten. The invitations are to weddings and anniversary parties; balls, including presidential inaugural balls (1873 and 1885); picnics; concerts; a sleigh ride party; children's parties, including a birthday party; school and college events and commencements; banquets; a ship launching; New Orleans Mardi Gras balls and St. Louis Veiled Prophet balls; and a few other events. A number of the invitations are illustrated.
